SAND SCULPTURE

In 2008, Cricket Taplin and her husband Marty, the owners of the Sagamore Hotel in Miami Beach, asked me to create a sculpture for Art Basel Miami. Cricket was famous for organizing the Art Basel breakfast at her hotel, where hundreds of art enthusiasts would start one of the busy art fair days. Also, the hotel owned a nice art collection. I love hotels, and I am always happy to work with them, so I said yes. However, I did not want to waste materials just for a few days at an art fair, so I decided on a sand sculpture. Sand, water, and pressure are the three ingredients to create a sand sculpture. It was very simple, and sand was not a rare material in Miami. I designed a female figure lying at the beach with an “art face” based on a famous painting by Paul Klee. I wanted to have a reference point many people would recognize. Also, I grew up with a poster of that painting at home. We hired a professional sand sculpture crew, and they worked a few days on creating that enormous art piece. After the art fair, bulldozers grounded the sculpture, and she became just a part of the beach.
